Baskische Übersetzung auf www.bilingual-picturebooks.org

Translation below

Seit kurzem haben wir auch zwei baskische Übersetzungen auf www.bilingual-picturebooks.org. Und wir haben Elene, die die Geschichte "Der flammende Fuchs" ins baskische übersetzt hat, gebeten, ob sie uns ein bisschen etwas über die Besonderheiten ihrer Muttersprache erzählen kann: 

"Da kam mir sofort ein Wort in den Sinn. Es ist nicht unübersetzbar, ich finde es nur wirklich niedlich. Das Wort für das Insekt Marienkäfer auf Baskisch ist "amona mantangorria", was wörtlich übersetzt "Oma mit roter Schürze" heißt. Das finde ich sehr süß.

[...] und bei der Übersetzung des Märchens "Der flammende Fuchs" ist mir ein Satz aufgefallen, nicht weil er besonders schwierig ist, sondern weil er mich auf seine wörtliche Bedeutung aufmerksam gemacht hat. "Sich verlieben" wird im Baskischen mit "maitemindu" übersetzt, was "von der Liebe verletzt" bedeutet, und das lässt mich an Amor denken, der seinen Pfeil abschießt!"

Wir finden es so spannend, was unsere Übersetzer*innen uns über ihre Muttersprachen berichten und dass wir auf diese Weise immer noch etwas dazu lernen können und dieses Mal haben wir uns wirklich sehr über das sprachliche Bild des Großmütterchens in roter Schürze gefreut und werden daran sicher noch oft denken, wenn uns im Frühling die ersten Marienkäfer begegnen.

We recently added two Basque translations to www.bilingual-picturebooks.org. And we asked Elene, who translated the story "The Flaming Fox" into Basque, if she could tell us a bit about the peculiarities of her mother tongue: 

"One word came to my mind instantly. It is not untranslatable, I just find it really cute. The word for the insect ladybug in Basque is "amona mantangorria", which translates literally to "grandma with a red apron", I think it's lovely.

[...] and when translating the tale "The Flaming Fox", one sentence called my attention, not because it's especially challenging but because it made me pay attention to its literal meaning. "To fall in love" is translated as "maitemindu" in Basque, which means "hurt by love", and it makes me think of Cupid shooting his arrow!"

We find it so exciting what our translators tell us about their mother tongues and that we can always learn something more this way. This time we really enjoyed the linguistic image of the grandmother in a red apron and will certainly think about it often when we see the first ladybirds this spring.
